Educational goals
The course aims to provide the student with advanced knowledge and skills in designing and implementing complex and demanding mid-scale networks. This course is a continuation of the course on Special Network Topics (CCNA) 1. During the course the student will gain a thorough understanding of the operation of complex networking protocols and technologies but will also have the opportunity to gain extensive experience in using and managing network devices (2nd and 3rd layer), implement complex networking scenarios and tackle all the problems encountered under realistic conditions. By the successful completion of the course the student should be able to:
- Understanding the operation of VTP and DTP protocols
- Know and evaluate the need of use and operation of the STP protocol
- Analyze and categorize the dynamic routing protocols
- Know and implement the EIGRP, OSPF and eBGP protocols
- Know the technologies of wide area networking
- Analyze and evaluate the operation and usefulness of the cloud and VPN technologies
- Understand and implement the advanced security configuration in the 3rd and 4th layers
General Skills
- Applying theoretical knowledge to practice. This is achieved in practice with laboratory exercises and various implementation scenarios.
- Search, analyze and synthesize data and information by using the necessary technologies
- Independent work when solving laboratory exercises
- Cooperation in the preparation of the exercises of each day
- Searching for data and information online
- Criticism and self-criticism ability
- Adaptation to new situations since students are asked to adapt their knowledge and skills to new implemented scenarios
Course Contents
– The VTP and DTP protocols for switched networks
– The STP protocol
– Dynamic routing protocols (link state – distance vector)
– The EIGRP and OSPF protocols

Students evaluation
The student's evaluation includes the assessment of the laboratory part on a week basis and the final written examination.
- Assessment of the laboratory part (40%)
The evaluation is performed by using the on-line platform netacad.com and it includes multiple choice questions, exercises, troubleshooting as well as implementation of protocols and technologies for use scenarios. The language of the assessment is English.
- Final written examination (60%)
It includes the assessment of both the theoretical and the practical parts of the course. It includes questions that require short answers, multiple choice questions and exercises. The language of the final examination is Greek/English.
The evaluation criteria are listed in the course’s webpage in the learning platform (Moodle) and are explained to the students in the classroom.
